AVM in India
Data of AVM in India

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are rare vascular anomalies characterized by abnormal connections between arteries and veins, bypassing the capillary system. Globally, the incidence of AVMs is estimated to be approximately 1 to 1.5 per 100,000 person-years, with a prevalence of about 0.01% in the general population. In India, specific data detailing the prevalence of AVMs in rural versus urban populations are limited. However, a retrospective study conducted at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences in South India analyzed cases of central nervous system vascular malformations diagnosed between April 2010 and April 2014.
While this study provides valuable insights into the occurrence of AVMs within a tertiary care setting, it does not offer a comparative analysis between rural and urban populations.
Given the rarity of AVMs and the limited availability of comprehensive epidemiological studies in India, particularly those distinguishing between rural and urban areas, it is challenging to provide precise prevalence rates. Further large-scale, population-based studies are necessary to elucidate the distribution and characteristics of AVMs across different demographics and regions within the country.
Approximately cost for procedure of AVM
The cost of treating arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) in India varies based on factors such as the treatment modality, hospital, and the complexity of the case. On average, patients might expect to pay anywhere from ₹1,00,000 to ₹4,50,000 for AVM embolization procedures. For surgical interventions, the costs can range from approximately ₹1,00,000 to ₹5,00,000. When considering treatment abroad, costs are generally higher. For instance, in European hospitals, the cost of AVM treatment can range from $23,000 to $30,840.
In the United States, the overall median cost of treatment is approximately $77,865, with surgical procedures involving preoperative embolization being the costliest at around $91,948. It's important to note that these figures are approximate and can vary based on individual circumstances, including the specific medical center, the patient's condition, and the chosen treatment approach. Therefore, it's advisable to consult directly with medical providers to obtain the most accurate and up-to-date information.
